Four
fun and easy preschool lessons to do around the house
Numbers & Alphabet
Numbers
and letters are taught with ease by using a set of magnetic letters
and numbers on your fridge. These will help give your preschooler
something fun, creative, and educational to keep them busy while you
are cooking or cleaning the kitchen. You can start with a few of each
and add new numbers and letters as they learn. To first introduce the
concept that the letters mean something, spell out my child's name on
the fridge and point it out to them daily.
Colors
Learning
to identify colors is a skill that does not require any special
purchase to teach. My favorite way to teach the primary colors is
with a colorful set of plastic cups. When your toddler is learning to
drink from a cup is a perfect time to help them easily learn to
distinguish between colors. When they ask for a drink show them two
cups and say, "would you like the blue one or the red one?"
You can also use plastic blocks, jumbo crayons, or any other items
that come in many colors.
Sorting
Following
directions, sorting, and task completion is easily taught to a
preschool child while teaching them to help fold laundry. Starting
with washcloths and socks, and young children can learn helping,
following directions, sorting, and task completion all while learning
to do a valuable family chore. Sure, laundry folding will take longer
than ever before, but it sure is better than it sitting on the couch
or in a basket for two days!
Reading Skills
While
your preschooler may not be ready to read, learning to love to read
starts now. Reading aloud to your child from a young age is one of
the best ways to insure that they will become lovers of reading and
books. Classic children's stories, picture books, nature books, and
more can all be found at your local library. Setting aside some quiet
time every day for reading aloud and reading alone is a good habit to
start young. And don't forget to let your child see you reading books
on a daily basis. Young children want to be just like mommy and
daddy, and a love of reading is a great habit for them to pick up.
